RWJUH Somerset completes final phase of 5-year cardiology services expansion project

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset recently renovated its cardiac catheterization laboratory, completing the final phase of its 5-year cardiology services expansion project.

The renovations included the addition of eight spacious, private bed bays where patients prepare for and recover from their procedures, and an isolation patient room as well as updated interior design finishes.

Procedures performed in the hospital’s cardiac catheterization laboratory include emergency and elective coronary angioplasty, cardiac catheterization and pacemaker implantations.

Previous phases of the cardiology services expansion project included the renovation of the hospital’s 2-East and 2-West Cardiac Pavilions and relocation of its Cardiac Diagnostic Testing Department to renovated space, consolidating all cardiology services on the hospital’s second floor.

“Our cardiology services expansion project has upgraded our facility to enhance the comfort and convenience of our patients while ensuring that they have access to the latest technologies needed for timely, accurate diagnoses and treatment,” Patrick Delaney, chief administrative officer, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, said. “This investment demonstrates our commitment to advancing the care we provide to improve the heart health of our community.”

Completed in October 2018, the first phase of the cardiology services expansion project included renovations to the 2-West Cardiology Pavilion, a 30-bed unit which features private and semiprivate patient rooms with “smart beds,” wireless telemetry technology and the GetWellNetwork interactive patient care system. Renovations to the 2-East Cardiology Pavilion, which mirrors the 2-West unit, were completed in June 2019.

One of the hospital’s three cardiac catheterization labs was updated in 2021 with the most advanced X-ray imaging technology. The Azurion with FlexArm image guided therapy system from Philips Healthcare provides high quality imaging at low X-ray dose levels. Its flexible positioning arm reduces the need to reposition patients, staff and equipment, resulting in more efficient care and shorter preparation and procedure times.

The Cardiac Diagnostic Testing Department was relocated to newly renovated space in February 2022. The 10,000-square-foot space comprises six patient bays and eight procedure rooms along with a bright, modern waiting area. The department features a state-of-the-art single-photon emission computed tomography scanner, a nuclear imaging device that uses a radiative tracer and a special camera to create high resolution 3-D images of the heart. Among the other cardiac diagnostic tests offered in the department are angiograms, computed tomography scans, echocardiograms and ultrasounds.

In addition to its inpatient care and diagnostic and treatment services, RWJUH Somerset also offers a three-phase cardiac rehabilitation program located in Hillsborough.
