M&T Bank, Entenmann’s step up to help military families dealing with food insecurity

Michael Schaffer, a Navy veteran and former New Jersey chaplain for the American Legion, is on a mission to end the food insecurity currently plaguing more than 600 families at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Tom Szukalski and Shannon Lazare from M&T Bank begin to sort through the donations.

Most every day, Schaffer jumps into his truck and heads somewhere in the state to collect food or monetary donations for Food Warriors, a nonprofit initiative Schaffer started when he heard there were families at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst having trouble putting enough food on their tables.

To date, Schaffer and the volunteers in his Food Warriors program have raised more than $80,000 and he has delivered and distributed more than 310,000 pounds of food with a big assist from the Red Cross.

Chaplain Michael Schaffer, left, joins M&T Bank volunteers at the Red Cross Building.

“Every dollar raised goes directly to buy food for the military families that need it,” Schaffer tells everyone he approaches about the program.

Last week, Schaffer and a staff of volunteers accepted large donations from Entenmann’s and M&T Bank, whose employees recently ran a statewide, monthlong collection for Food Warriors.

Food Warriors is part of the Military Support Alliance of New Jersey, a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization focused on improving the quality of life for the men and women in uniform who live and work in New Jersey.

The Food Warriors’ mission is completed and the military families at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst will have the additional food they need for another week.
