Norcross presents World War II veteran with additional medals for his service

In December, U.S. Representative Donald Norcross (D-NJ) presented World War II veteran Gilbert Klein with five medals and two awards to honor his service.

Klein served in the Navy from 1944-1946 and was involved in Operation Juneau, a post-war campaign to clear the East China Sea of mines. He was also part of the post-war occupation of Okinawa, Japan.

Norcross was joined at the presentation by Melinda Kane, Camden County commissioner and Randall Teague, Haddon Township mayor.

The 99-year-old Klein was awarded the Combat Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Honorable Discharge Button, and Honorable Service Lapel Pin.

“It is an honor to recognize Gilbert Klein’s remarkable service to our country,” Norcross said at the presentation. “As a World War II Navy veteran, Gilbert’s critical work in Operation Juneau and his efforts to ensure the safety of U.S. forces during the American post-war occupation of Japan is inspiring to us all. On behalf of a grateful nation, we thank Gilbert for his service and sacrifices.”

The US Navy, after reviewing Klein’s record, determined the Philadelphia native was eligible for the additional medals.

“Today, we honor Gilbert Kein by presenting him with five medals and two awards that highlight his bravery and service in World War II,” Teague said. “Our veterans all make immense sacrifices, and we thank Gilbert for the work he did to keep his fellow Americans safe.”

“Gilbert is a remarkable person who served his country during one of the most turbulent times in our nation’s history,” Kane added. “It is such an honor to celebrate him and all of his accomplishments.”
