ShopRite of Watchung opening April 9, grand opening celebration April 13

Grab your shopping lists and your coffee mugs — the brand-new ShopRite of Watchung is officially opening Wednesday, April 9 at the Blue Star Shopping Center, with a community grand opening celebration set for Sunday, April 13.

Operated by Village Super Market and the Sumas family — longtime grocers in Watchung — the 51,000-square-foot store is being dubbed the “New Star of Blue Star,” and it’s easy to see why. The sleek new supermarket will feature chef-prepared meals, global flavors, hand-rolled sushi, over 600 cheeses, and grab-and-go favorites from NYC staples Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market.

The April 13 celebration starts early — 6 a.m., to be exact. The first 250 customers will get free swag bags and a carton of eggs, along with fresh coffee and pastries. A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. will feature the Sumas family, local mayors, and performances by the Watchung Hills Regional High School Marching Band and Cheerleaders. After that: a party with a DJ, food trucks, tastings, giveaways, face painting, caricatures, and more.

As part of the festivities, Village Super Market will donate $5,000 each to Dudley House Veterans Transitional Housing and the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.

“We’re proud to open a modern store that brings elevated shopping to the community,” said Perry Blatt, director of e-commerce and a third-generation member of the Sumas family.
