New York Medical College and Hudson Regional Health establish academic relationship

New York Medical College (NYMC) in Valhalla, N.Y., and Hudson Regional Health (HRH) in Jersey City have formed a new academic affiliation, designating HRH as a teaching site for the training and education of NYMC’s medical students. NYMC will also assume sponsorship of HRH’s current residency and fellowship programs.

This partnership with NYMC will support HRH’s goal to become one of the largest sponsors of graduate medical education in New Jersey. It also enhances NYMC’s extensive network of affiliated hospitals and clinical sites that encompasses more than 30 affiliates in eight states — New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Arizona and Florida.

“This new partnership with NYMC will ensure that Hudson County and the tri-state area continue to benefit from a pipeline of exceptional physicians with the best possible education in the years to come,” said Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, CEO of HRH.

HRH is a network of four New Jersey hospitals: Bayonne University Hospital, Hoboken University Hospital, Heights University Hospital in Jersey City, and Secaucus University Hospital. Bayonne University Hospital and Secaucus University Hospital recently received designations as university-affiliated teaching hospitals, joining the Hoboken and Jersey City facilities. HRH has grown and expanded its graduate medical education offerings, preparing medical students, residents, and fellows with the latest teaching modalities and technology, continuing its long-standing commitment to medical education.

“Exposing our students to a wide range of clinical environments is essential to their development as compassionate, capable physicians,” said Dr. Neil W. Schluger, dean of the NYMC School of Medicine. “The addition of HRH to our network further broadens these opportunities, offering rich and varied experiences across multiple communities in New Jersey.”

Founded in 1860, NYMC is one of the oldest and largest health sciences colleges in the country, with nearly 2,000 students and more than 700 residents and clinical fellows, more than 1,900 faculty members, and more than 26,000 living alumni.

The agreement will establish various clerkships, sub-internships, and electives at the four hospitals for NYMC medical students in the near future. In addition, NYMC will assume sponsorship of HRH’s residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, and surgery, a transitional year residency program, and a fellowship program in gastroenterology. HRH and NYMC will also explore and partner in developing multiple residency programs in a variety of needed specialties throughout Hudson County and New Jersey.
