Hospitals and health systems around New Jersey have been announcing various programs and waivers to help furloughed or unpaid employees during the federal government shutdown.
The strategies range from waiving out-of-pocket costs to expediting appointments. Check with hospitals and health systems for specifics.

Atlantic Health System
- Waiving copays for federal government employees at the emergency department and at AHS medical practices.
- Also holding job fairs to help workers finding temporary or full-time roles at AHS.
Bergen New Bridge Medical Center
- Offering free food at the hospital’s cafeteria for all furloughed federal employees and their families.
- Also offering jobs to those affected, with expedited job offers in as little as two days.
Cooper University Health Care
- Offering primary care appointments within 24 hours for furloughed employees and their immediate family members.
Hackensack Meridian Health
- Waiving deductibles and copays for emergency visits for furloughed employees and their insured family members.
Holy Name Medical Center
- Waiving deductibles and copays at the hospital for furloughed employees, including for primary care physicians and specialists.
Inspira Health Network
- Waiving out-of-pocket costs for furloughed employees and their dependents at emergency rooms and urgent care centers. Patients will need to show their government ID.
RWJBarnabas Health
- Waiving deductibles and copays for any visit for furloughed employees and their dependents throughout the entire system, including physicians and ambulatory sites.
- Deferring payments due for past visits until after shutdown ends.
St. Joseph’s Health
- Waiving deductibles and copays for emergency services for furloughed federal employees and their dependents.
Saint Peter’s University Hospital
- Waiving co-pays and deductibles for furloughed federal government employees and their dependents for outpatient emergency and related ambulatory services. Government ID required, plus must sign a certification attesting to eligibility and financial hardship.
Trinitas Regional Medical Center
- Waiving copays for hospital services for affected federal employees. Patients will need to provide proof they are federal employees and not receiving pay.
