Gov. Phil Murphy quickly left a public event Wednesday after he learned someone he was in contact with Saturday had tested positive for COVID-19.
“I was just informed by my colleagues that I was in close proximity to someone on Saturday who has just tested positive,” Murphy said to those in attendance. “I’ve got to go take myself at least off the field and go and get tested today.”
Murphy made mention of following COVID protocol, regardless of who the person is.
“I can’t ask President (Donald) Trump not to come to Bedminster and do a fundraiser, and have me sit here,” he said.
ROI-NJ was not at the event, which was held outdoors at Camden County College.
Officials with the governor said they would release a statement on the situation, but had not as of the time of this report.
It is unclear how long Murphy will quarantine or if first lady Tammy Murphy, their children or members of the governor’s staff also will be impacted.
Murphy and other officials announced at the event that $14 million in CARES Act funding would be going to workforce development initiatives.
The governor’s next scheduled public appearance is Thursday, his COVID-19 briefing in Trenton.
