United, betting on return to Europe, adds new routes from Newark

United Airlines, betting on a strong return to trans-Atlantic travel next summer, announced it will be starting flights from Newark Liberty International Airport to four European destinations — in Spain, Portugal, Norway and the Canary Islands — next spring.

In addition, the airline will add additional service to Dublin and Rome and restart a flight to Nice that was stopped due to the pandemic.

Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of international network and alliances at United, said the airline is betting big on a return to the air.

“Given our big expectations for a rebound in travel to Europe for summer, this is the right time to leverage our leading global network in new, exciting ways,” he said. “Our expansion offers the widest range of destinations to discover — introducing new, trendy locales that our customers will love, as well as adding more flights to iconic, popular cities.”

The airline, which remains one of the state’s largest employers, is making a number of moves from a number of U.S. cities.

Here are the ones that impact Newark:

  • Newark to Norway: Beginning May 20, United will become the only U.S. carrier to fly to Norway, with flights launching between Newark and Bergen. United will offer three times weekly service.
  • Newark to Portugal: United will make Ponta Delgada, Azores, its third Portuguese destination, beginning May 13. It will be the only flight to the Azores from the New York metro area. This daily service joins United’s existing flights to Porto, which will return in March, and Lisbon, which the airline is currently operating.
  • Newark to Spain: United is expanding its Spanish beach getaway destinations with three times weekly flights between Newark and Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, launching June 2. This will be the first and only flight between the U.S. and Mallorca.
  • Newark to Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain: United will be the only airline to fly direct between the Canary Islands and North America with three times weekly service launching June 9.
