Forbes ‘Best Employers for Diversity 2022’ lists 13 from N.J.

Forbes on Tuesday announced it released its “Best Employers for Diversity 2022” list together with Statista Inc., a world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider.

The list was compiled by surveying more than 60,000 Americans who work for companies with at least 1,000 employees and identified organizations that are the most committed to diversity, equity & inclusion.

The evaluation was based on the following criteria:

  • Direct recommendations: Employees were asked to give their opinions on a series of statements regarding age, gender, ethnicity, disability, LGBTQIA+ and general diversity in their current workplace. The recommendations of women, elders and ethnic minorities were weighted higher than the non-minority groups.
  • Indirect recommendations: Participants were also given the chance to evaluate other employers in their respective industries that stand out either positively or negatively with regard to diversity. Only the recommendations of minority groups were considered.
    Diversity among top executives/board and diversity engagement indicators were also part of the evaluation.

Forbes says this year’s list features a higher proportion of companies in banking and financial services, the health care and social sector and education. Each sector increased its presence on the 500-company list, with each making up 8% of the list versus 6% last year.

“The impact of COVID-19 took the world by storm and revealed the magnitude of inequalities that exist in communities of color, especially Black- and minority-owned businesses,” John Patton, head of U.S. diversity and inclusion at TD Bank, said, Forbes was told in an email. “To stay on track and continue on our path to diversify talent across the organization, we’ve enhanced our focus on diversity & inclusion and we report on our progress annually as part of our Environment, Social & Governance Reporting suite.”

This is Forbes’ fifth annual list of America’s Best Employers for Diversity. More than 10,000 companies were reviewed and roughly 2,000 were given a diversity score, which takes into account surveys of a firm’s diverse employees and its publicly disclosed information about representation.
