Best of ROI 2024: Thought-provoking projects by SJI and NJ Resources are our stories of the year in Energy

Here’s the deal with new concepts in energy. No one knows what will work – or work while being cost effective. Solar, offshore wind, hydrogen, nuclear: There are numerous trial-and-error ideas out there, just to name a few.

We have great respect for those seeking the answers.

SJI is partnering with Captona, RNG Energy Solutions on largest food waste-to-renewable natural gas facility in U.S. It just broke ground in Linden.

NJ Natural Gas, a subsidiary of NJ Resources, installed a breakthrough carbon-capture system at its headquarters in Wall.

Both projects are forward-thinking – and worthy of being in a tie for the top spot of our energy stories of the year.

Here’s a look at our Top Ten:

No. 10: Sustainability Center

PSEG and Stevens collaborating can only be a good thing.

No. 9: PSEG on the Move

Well, kind of. The state’s largest utility, in the middle of upgrading all of its facilities, will eventually be looking for a new HQ. The company has pledged it will be in Newark.

No. 8: Health Care and Solar: Perfect Together

We’re not making a pun – it actually is. Health care facilities are some of the largest energy users in the state. That’s why Hackensack Meridian Health’s effort to bring solar into all of their facilities is an impactful move.

No. 7: We Need More Power!

We can only wish we had the power generation that the Enterprise had. We don’t. Not even close. That’s why this discussion of the power grid that I had the honor of moderating was so enlightening.

No. 6: Settling up

Orsted, which pulled its offshore wind projects, settled up on a lawsuit that followed, paying the state far less ($125 million) than it had hoped for ($300 million).

No. 5: Offshore moving forward

Atlantic Shores CEO Juris Veldhoven, in an exclusive interview with ROI, said his company, which has the most mature offshore wind projects in state, can have Atlantic Shores 1 completed by end of decade — if its re-bid during recent solicitation is approved by BPU.

No. 4: EVs aren’t EZ for Trucks

Making all trucks go electric is a nice thought. Just not a practical one. At least that is the take of 33 business groups.

No. 3: EV sales are flickering

The state’s aggressive EV mandates – while wonderful in theory – have been woeful in practice. You can’t sell what people do not want.

No. 1 tie: Capturing the carbon

This unique system at NJ Natural Gas not only captures carbon emissions, it does so in a process that creates a solid that can be repurposed for commercial products, including soap, detergents and durable building materials. How cool is that?

No. 1 tie: Getting gas from food

Couldn’t resist the headline – and it’s not what you’re thinking. SJI broke ground on a facility that will turn food waste into renewable natural gas. This is type of forward-thinking action that can only help the state – and the environment.
