In observation of February’s Heart Month, and as a part of its ongoing commitment to its community’s health, Bridgewater Commons will once again join forces with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset to present the Third Annual “Go Red Fashion Show and Health Fest,” on Feb. 22 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the mall’s Center Court and Lower Level.
Hosted by stylist Leslie Patrizio, the fashion show will feature heart survivors and health care practitioners modeling clothing provided by the mall’s shops including Athleta, Bloomingdale’s, Chico’s, lululemon and Macy’s on a red runway.
Guests will experience a special music performance by pop/rock artist Devon Marie, who shared the stage with music icon Debbie Gibson and other high-profile artists such as Paul Shaffer, Dee Snider and Bret Michaels.
The show will be free, with seating first-come, first-served.
Dr. Sanjukta Sanyal, a cardiologist at RWJUH Somerset and a member of RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group, will kick off the fashion show with important information for women about symptoms of a heart attack and strategies for good heart health.
“Heart disease has been the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. since 1950, but there is much we can do to lower our risk,” Tom Kovacic, marketing and business development director at Bridgewater Commons said. “At Bridgewater Commons, we consider educating our guests about their heart health as a sacred duty to our community, and we are thrilled to once again partner with RWJUH Somerset.”
Bridgewater Township Mayor Matthew Moench will return as special guest speaker.
“Once again my family and I are proud to help support this important event, which continues to be so critical to the health of our community,” Moench said. “I can’t wait to see my daughters enjoying the runway once again while we learn more about our own wellness.”
“Everyone needs to make a plan for a healthy heart,” Deirdre Blaus, interim chief administrative officer, RWJUH Somerset said. “Eating right, exercising regularly and knowing important numbers like your blood pressure and cholesterol are key. We look forward to partnering again with Bridgewater Commons for this fun event for Heart Month to help create greater awareness of how individuals of any age can develop heart healthy habits throughout their lives.”
Education and health promotion are critical parts of the partnership between RWJUH Somerset and Bridgewater Commons. The hospital sponsors a Heartchecker kiosk, which provides free blood pressure screenings, on the center’s second level. They also partner on a HealthHike Walking Program, which provides a climate-controlled environment for walkers seven days a week. Health education programs and screenings are offered each month free of charge to walkers. Dr. Steven Georgeson, a cardiologist with RWJUH Somerset, also holds a monthly “Walk with A Doc” at the mall. The hospital and the center have also partnered on Go Pink at the Commons each October to promote breast cancer awareness.
