Commissioner Abdou to step down from NJBPU

New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) Commissioner Marian Abdou announced that she will step down from her position as commissioner, effective August 1, 2025.

Abdou was appointed by Governor Phil Murphy as commissioner of NJBPU and confirmed by the New Jersey Senate in May 2023 to fill a holdover seat. She completed the remainder of the term, which ended in October 2024.

“The board is losing a thoughtful and discerning commissioner who put the residents of New Jersey at the forefront of every question and every decision she made while at the NJBPU. New Jersey is a better place because of her public service,” said Christine Guhl-Sadovy, president, NJBPU. “I am deeply grateful for Marian’s expertise, dedication and support over the last two years and will miss her dearly. I wish her and her family the absolute best.”

“I thank Commissioner Marian Abdou for her service on the Board of Public Utilities and wish her the very best as she steps away to focus on her family,” said Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco in a statement. “While I respect her decision and wish her well, this transition presents a critical opportunity for the state. We must appoint someone to the BPU who will make energy affordability and increased generation a top priority. “

Prior to her nomination, Commissioner Abdou served as managing senior counsel at NRG Energy, where she provided legal support to the asset management group, the energy services group and the business development group.

Before that role, Commissioner Abdou was an in-house attorney at two other energy companies and was in private practice at three law firms. Commissioner Abdou earned her bachelor’s degree, MBA and juris doctor from Rutgers University. She has been admitted to the bar for New Jersey and New York.
