Valley Health System names Shaaban chief academic officer

Valley Health System has announced the appointment of Reham Shaaban to the role of chief academic officer.

In this leadership role, Shaaban will provide strategic oversight of Valley’s Office of Academic Affairs, which consists of a growing roster of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited medical education programs sponsored by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, including residency training programs in internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and surgery.

As part of her oversight, she will advance medical education, faculty development, scholarship and research across Valley Health System.

Shaaban will continue to serve as the program director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program and Valley’s designated institutional official, who is responsible for overseeing all medical education programs and compliance with accreditation requirements. She will also serve on the Icahn School of Medicine’s academic governance committees to advance shared strategic, educational and research initiatives.

“Dr. Shaaban’s appointment to chief academic officer marks an important moment in Valley’s organizational growth,” said Robert Brenner, M.D., MMM, FACHE, president and CEO of Valley Health System.

“Her nationally recognized expertise in medical education and her ability to build strong academic frameworks will help position Valley for long-term success as we expand our teaching and research enterprise and further integrate these programs into our delivery of care.”

Shaaban brings more than 17 years of leadership experience in academic medicine to her new role. Since joining Valley in 2022, she has played a pivotal part in transforming the organization into an emerging academic medical center, leading the design, accreditation and strategic growth of its medical education programs.

She is committed to mentorship, learner well-being, high-quality patient care and building inclusive, innovative learning environments.

“The creation of this new role reflects Valley’s continued commitment to advancing and scaling its academic mission, and I am honored to have been appointed to it,” said Shaaban.

“I look forward to advancing medical education, supporting faculty and accelerating meaningful research across Valley Health System that aligns with our clinical mission, quality and safety priorities.”

Shaaban is widely recognized for her contributions to medical education and has received numerous honors, including the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) New England Clinician-Educator Award, the American Medical Association (AMA) Inspiration Award, designation as one of the American College of Physicians (ACP) Hospitalist’s Top 10 Hospitalists of the Year and additional outstanding teacher awards.

She has presented nationally and internationally, authored peer-reviewed work and led several Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved educational research initiatives.
