Velez, Diaz to be honored with trailblazer awards at Hispanic Chamber gala

Cavany Foods of Jersey City earns Business of the Year Award

Jen Velez and Ulises Diaz, top executives at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, will be honored with Trailblazer awards at the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey’s annual awards gala Dec. 2 at the Pines Manor in Edison.

Velez, long a powerful figure in New Jersey health care, currently serves as an executive vice president. She will be honored with the Latina Trailblazer of the Year Award.

Diaz, well known in political circles around the state, currently serves as a senior vice president of government and community affairs. He will be honored with the Latino Trailblazer of the Year Award.

Cavany Foods, a gastronomic company that offers a creative and healthy alternative to satisfy the most demanding tastes — including vegan and gluten-free options of gourmet recipes from continental and American cuisine — will be honored with the Business of the Year Award.

Chamber CEO Carlos Media said the honorees will help cap a big evening.

“The SHCCNJ presents these prestigious awards each year to extraordinary and visionary entrepreneurs and corporate and government advocates,” Medina said. “The awards are based on those who have contributed to and demonstrated exemplary excellence and leadership in their professions and business ventures.”

The event, always a favorite for those on the gala scene, will aim to celebrate another strong year for the fastest-growing minority business group in the state.

The SHCCNJ is the voice of the more than 120,000 Latino businesses that contribute more than $20 billion to the New Jersey economy.

The chamber’s mission remains to educate, train and advocate for its members in the political landscape and provide procurement opportunities for all its members.

The SHCCNJ recently was recently awarded the “Best Chamber of the Year” by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
