StationMD, a Maplewood-based telehealth company dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and/or development disabilities — one that provides the highest-quality medical care, fostering independence and improving quality of life — deserves support.
UnitedHealthcare is doing just that.
On Friday, UHC announced that StationMD is one of 10 health startups nationwide that has been selected to participate in the United Healthcare 2023 Accelerator program.
The four-month collaborative mentorship-driven program, which began in 2019, is seen as a way for UHC to continue to play a leading role in driving the future of health.
Leaders from these startups will have the opportunity to work closely with UnitedHealthcare executives and subject matter experts from across the health care industry to evolve their businesses while participating alongside a growing community of their peers.
Executive Director Clayton Burke said the program’s impact is large.
“Every year, we are invigorated by the opportunity to collaborate with a new group of bold innovators,” he said. “This year’s application process was our most competitive yet — a testament to the impact of this program and the valuable role our mentors and leaders from across UnitedHealth Group perform.
“It’s an incredible privilege to play a small part in what these companies are building, and we are thrilled to welcome another distinguished cohort.”
StationMD is working to serve the more than 8 million people in the U.S. with I/DD, a community that faces disparities in health care access and quality, frequently resulting in emergency room visits and hospitalizations from avoidable causes.
StationMD has built a multipronged care delivery platform for the I/DD population that:
- Trains providers to specialize in acute care episodes for patients with I/DD;
- Operates I/DD acute care telemedicine platform with 24/7 access to providers;
- Delivers a leading psychiatry program co-developed with Washington University in St. Louis;
- Engages patients with non-clinical tasks (prescription refills, social determinants of health navigation, etc.) to support Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set performance;
UHC officials said the 2023 class represents a wide range of opportunities among the populations UnitedHealthcare serves, with companies focused on topics like AI-powered care management, access to care, addressing health inequities and benefits experiences.
Consistent with the program’s belief that diverse perspectives are critical inputs to tackling these problems, 90% of this year’s companies were founded by women and/or people of color.
