Big step: Gateway Development Commission expected to award 1st construction project to Conti on Monday

Tonnelle Avenue project in North Bergen is 1 of 9 parts of overall tunnel project

In a move that further indicates the Hudson Tunnel Project is coming on strong, the board of the Gateway Development Commission is expected to award the construction services for the $28.5 million Tonnelle Avenue Overhead Bridge and Utility Relocation Project to Edison-based Conti Civil LLC at its Monday afternoon meeting, according to documents posted by the GDC on Sunday afternoon.

New York-based Naik Consulting Group is expected to be selected for construction management and related technical services.

The Tonnelle Avenue project, located in North Bergen, is one of nine subcontracts that make up the Gateway project. Its significance, however, is great.

Tonnelle Avenue not only is the starting point of the project on the New Jersey side, but it also was the only part of the ARC Tunnel project that had started before that project was cancelled in 2009.

The GDC also is expected to announce a partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in which the Port helps oversee four other subcontract portions of the project involving Hudson River ground stabilization, the Palisades Tunnell, the Manhattan Tunnel — and the main tunnel that goes from New Jersey to New York.

The in-person meeting starts at noon, with the public portion scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. It will be viewable on the Gateway Program’s website in real time.

The GDC said the public is encouraged to register for in-person public comments on the day of the board meeting or submit virtual public comments via the comment form on the site.

Virtual public comments received by 5 p.m. Sunday will be distributed to the board, posted on the GDC website prior to the meeting and recorded in the public record. Virtual public comments received prior to the end of the meeting will be distributed to the board and posted on the GDC website.

All awards and agreements must be approved by the board.
