McManimon dies at 77: Great attorney, fabulous person

Edward McManimon was one of the top attorneys of his generation. The Roseland-based firm he co-founded more than a generation ago, McManimon, Scotland & Baumann, is proof of that.

His legal work, however, did not begin to celebrate the essence of the man. Those who knew him best said McManimon lived to serve — humbly, simply and purely.

His efforts, they said, began with humility. Despite his obvious talents and achievements, and the acknowledgments that followed, McManimon remained ready to assist and serve all of us. No ask too small. No task below his stature. He met people where they were — not the other way around.

McManimon, 77, recently passed away, the firm announced.

He will be missed greatly.

Those who knew him best said McManimon always remained only a call, email, text or conversation away — whether others needed reassurance, advice or more prodding.

At his core, McManimon served as an adviser, coach and mentor, but mostly as a servant to others. Through that service, he celebrated the success of others — and helped others through their failures.

McManimon was born Nov. 15, 1946, into a large, loving family. He attended Notre Dame High School and Georgetown University, where he earned his bachelor’s and law degrees. He married his first love, Chris, and became a devoted father to Maura and Christopher, and devoted grandfather to Liam, Seamus and Killeen.

Over the course of his career, McManimon was rightly honored by his university, his colleagues and numerous professional organizations for his commitment to, and impact on, those institutions and the people they represent. He left an indelible mark on Georgetown, his firm and the legal community.

Family, friends and his firm were his greatest love. They brought him happiness and joy.

His family asks others to remember him by recommitting to their potential — and to live each day as McManimon did: Humbly, simply and purely.
