Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center integrates AI-powered technologies for cutting-edge cardiac care

Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center is revolutionizing the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) through the adoption of two state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) technologies: the HeartFlow FFRCT Analysis and the CathWorks FFRangio® System.

“Our integration of HeartFlow and CathWorks technologies demonstrates our commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation in cardiac care,” Tim O’Brien, CEO said. “These tools not only elevate the precision of our diagnostics but also reinforce our mission to deliver exceptional, patient-centered outcomes.”

The HeartFlow FFRCT Analysis uses advanced AI to transform data from a standard coronary computed tomography angiogram (CTA) into a 3D model of a patient’s coronary arteries. This model calculates fractional flow reserve (FFRCT) values, enabling clinicians to visualize arterial blockages and understand their impact on blood flow.

By offering detailed insights, the HeartFlow technology facilitates:

• Accurate diagnoses: Physicians can identify blockages requiring intervention with greater precision.

• Personalized care: Treatment strategies are tailored to the patient’s specific condition, reducing reliance on invasive procedures.

• Improved outcomes: Early and accurate detection of CAD supports timely interventions, improving long-term prognosis.

The CathWorks FFRangio® System complements the HeartFlow technology by assessing coronary physiology during catheterization using AI-driven analysis of routine angiograms. This approach eliminates the need for additional invasive tools or medications, offering:

• Real-time insights: Immediate fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurements during procedures allow for faster decision-making.

• Increased accuracy: Advanced algorithms deliver precise assessments to guide percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

• Enhanced comfort: Patients experience reduced discomfort and risk by avoiding invasive pressure wires and hyperemic agents.

“The adoption of these AI-powered tools represents a significant milestone in our pursuit of excellence in cardiac care,” Dr. Ankitkumar Patel, medical director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory said. “They allow us to make faster, more precise decisions that are tailored to each patient, providing a new level of precision and innovation for our community.”

“Artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare, particularly in coronary artery disease,” Dr. Valerie Allusson, chief medical officer said. “Innovative tools like HeartFlow and CathWorks turn imaging data into actionable insights, enhancing diagnostics and ensuring patients receive timely, effective care. These advancements reflect Mountainside Medical Center’s commitment to bringing cutting-edge technology to our community.”

Among other hospitals in the Hackensack Meridian Health network, HeartFlow technology is also utilized at Hackensack University Medical Center, Palisades Medical Center, JFK University Medical Center, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Riverview Medical Center, Bayshore Medical Center, Raritan Bay Medical Center, and Old Bridge Medical Center. CathWorks technology is available at Hackensack University Medical Center, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and JFK University Medical Center.
