The ShopRites of Bayonne & Metro Plaza in Jersey City raised more than $19,000 for the annual ShopRite Partners In Caring Cheerios Contest, sponsored in partnership with General Mills, that raises awareness of hunger and food insecurity. The Inserra family owns and operates both ShopRite stores.

The funds were collected during Hunger Action Month in September and will go to local food banks and organizations fighting hunger in the community. The ShopRites of Bayonne and Metro Plaza will each unveil a special edition Cheerios box featuring ShopRite team members from the top fundraising stores.

The annual ShopRite Partners In Caring Cheerios Contest raises more than $1.3 million to combat hunger. ShopRite associates at nearly 270 stores compete each fall in a competition called the ShopRite Partners In Caring Cheerios Contest. Associates at ShopRite stores collect donations at checkout and in-store as they compete to raise the most money and earn a spot on the Cheerios cereal box. Shoppers are also encouraged to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar at checkout The top 47 fundraising ShopRite stores select associates to be featured on special edition Cheerios boxes, sold exclusively at ShopRite and unveiled during in-store events from March through May. Each winning store also receives prize money to donate to local food pantries selected by the store teams.

The two Hudson County stores will also make a donation to the Community FoodBank of NJ of Hillside and The Sharing Place of Jersey City at an event on April 29, first at the ShopRite on 583-9 Avenue C in Bayonne at 10 a.m., and at the ShopRite of Metro Plaza in Jersey City on 400 Marin Blvd., Metro Plaza Drive  at 12:30 p.m. Representatives of The Sharing Place and Community FoodBank of NJ are scheduled to be in attendance.

The ShopRite Partners In Caring began in 1999 and has donated $65 million to more than 2,500 charities. The program supports emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, childcare centers, battered women’s shelters, senior citizen programs, drug rehab centers, programs for the mentally and physically disabled, after-school programs and other organizations that aid those in need.
