NJNG installs carbon-capture technology

The Carbon Capsule at NJNG. – Carbon Reform

New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG), principal subsidiary of New Jersey Resources, announced July 25 that it has installed Carbon Reform’s carbon reduction system to help advance its building decarbonization efforts. This system is in place at the NJNG Lakewood operations center and is the first of its kind in New Jersey.

The Philadelphia-based company’s carbon reduction system is a retrofit solution that utilizes permanent carbon capture to reduce building emissions. The system’s capabilities can deliver other benefits to commercial properties including reduced energy costs and increased overall efficiency, according to Wall Township-based NJNG.

“This represents a fundamental shift in how we think about carbon removal – from massive industrial installations to distributed systems that can work in everyday office buildings, schools, and retail spaces where people actually spend their time,” said Jo Norris, Carbon Reform CEO.

Patrick Migliaccio, senior vice president and COO of New Jersey Natural Gas, said, “NJNG is committed to identifying innovative technologies that provide practical, cost-effective solutions to emissions reduction for our customers. The installation of Carbon Reform’s system at NJNG helps showcase the opportunity for this emerging technology and provides real-world insight on how these units perform.”

In 2022, direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from homes and businesses accounted for 31% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Retrofitting legacy infrastructure is challenging. Most existing solutions require major construction, system overhauls, or long payback periods that make them impractical.

“Commercial buildings have unique constraints,” said Norris. “Limited space, diverse HVAC systems, and operators who need immediate operational benefits alongside climate impact. Our modular approach is designed specifically for these real-world challenges.”

Carbon Reform’s Carbon Capsule model is a modular design with color and sizing options to fit specific space requirements. As the company’s lowest energy model, the Carbon Capsule V3 provides buildings with an efficient and adaptable solution to reduce emissions that integrates with existing HVAC systems.

“The vast majority of buildings that will exist in 2050 are already standing today,” said Norris. “If we’re serious about hitting climate targets, we need retrofit solutions that work with existing infrastructure, not technologies that require complete overhauls.”
