5 N.J. colleges make Forbes’ Best Value list

Are you (or your parents) aiming to score the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to tuition costs in New Jersey? Take heed, as Forbes released its annual Best Value Colleges 2018 list, and five Garden State schools scored in the rankings.

The rankings consist of 300 schools scored on net price, net debt, alumni earnings, timely graduation, school quality and access for low-income students. The list, Forbes said, evaluates schools offering four-year degrees and does not include private, for-profit schools.

Princeton University topped the list from New Jersey, coming in at No. 8 overall. Its in-state tuition is $43,450 and it has a total student body of 8,138.

The two schools at the top of the list are state research universities. The University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of California, Berkeley, were ranked No. 1 and No 2, respectively.

Here are the five colleges on the list from New Jersey, and their ranking:

8. Princeton University, Princeton;
80. Rutgers University, New Brunswick;
96. New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark;
186. The College of New Jersey, Ewing;
239. Montclair State University, Montclair.

Of note was that, despite the wage gap and pay inequality issues, six women’s schools made the list. Wellesley College is No. 36, Barnard College is No. 67, Smith College is No. 165, Scripps College is No. 171, Mount Holyoke College is No. 268 and Bryn Mawr College is No. 279.
