ADP: Private sector employment up by 2.4M jobs in June

Private sector employment increased by nearly 2.4 million jobs between May and June, according to the June ADP National Employment Report by Roseland-based ADP.

“Small business hiring picked up in the month of June,” Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute, said. “As the economy slowly continues to recover, we are seeing a significant rebound in industries that once experienced the greatest job losses.  In fact, 70% of the jobs added this month were in the leisure and hospitality, trade and construction industries.”

The report by the payroll and human services company said the month saw a 2.369 million-job increase in nonfarm private employment.

There were gains in all company sizes and sectors, ADP said.

Small businesses with less than 50 employees gained 937,000 jobs during the period, while large businesses with more than 500 workers gained 873,000 and medium businesses with 50 to 499 employees gained 559,000.

It was also a positive month for the goods-producing and service-providing sectors, which both experienced upticks in the job market — 457,000 and 1.912 million, respectively.

Among industries:

  • Natural resources/mining: -26,000
  • Construction: 394,000
  • Manufacturing: 88,000
  • Trade/transportation/utilities: 288,000
  • Information: -50,000
  • Financial activities: 65,000
  • Professional/business services: 151,000
  • Education/health services: 283,000
  • Leisure/hospitality: 961,000
  • Other services: 215,000
  • Franchise jobs: 4,500.

The data sample represents 460,000 U.S. clients employing nearly 26 million workers in the U.S., ADP said.
