Accomplished sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon joins RWJBarnabas Health, Rutgers Health

Dr. Peter DeLuca, a fellowship-trained sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon and a physician to major professional sports teams, has joined the combined medical group of RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Health.

He is affiliated with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston and will also join Jersey City Medical Center later this year.

DeLuca’s specialty expertise includes anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, shoulder labral repair and advanced arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder and knee.

“The addition of Dr. DeLuca reinforces our commitment to providing access to first-rate health care throughout New Jersey,” said Andy Anderson, CEO and president of the combined medical group.

Throughout his career, DeLuca has been dedicated to treating athletes of all ages, including those in professional sports. He is the director of orthopedic surgery for the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team, a sports medicine consultant for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms hockey team and the NHL co-chair of the Research Committee.

In addition to serving as the head team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1997-2018, he was the NFC Pro Bowl team physician in 2002, 2003 and 2010. His vast expertise also extended internationally, serving as an NHL consultant for the Sochi, Russia, Winter Olympics in 2014.

In 2014, DeLuca received the Dick Vermeil Life Time Achievement Award from the Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation for his outstanding contribution and dedication in the field of sports medicine. He was inducted into the Saint Peter’s University Athletic Hall of Fame in in 2010.

DeLuca attended Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He went on to complete a sports medicine fellowship at Yale University Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut.
