AtlantiCare, southern New Jersey’s largest health system, said Sept. 8 it appointed nationally recognized breast surgical oncologist Dr. Kay Yoon-Flannery, as chief of women’s oncology at the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute.
A fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist known for her advanced techniques and patient-centered care, Yoon-Flannery will lead the strategic expansion of AtlantiCare’s women’s oncology program. Under her leadership, breast, gynecologic and genetic cancer services will be aligned to create a more connected experience for women during their care experience.
“This is an opportunity to bring breast, gynecologic and genetic cancer services together under one program, making care easier to access and navigate,” said Dr. Yoon-Flannery. “My vision is for women to feel supported and connected through every stage of their journey, without having to piece it together on their own.”
Breast health is often the first point of contact for patients, and the program builds on that trust to connect them with broader services. It also strengthens efforts around access and equity, with the goal of making care easier to navigate, more responsive and grounded in the realities of women’s lives.
“Dr. Yoon-Flannery is a women’s healthcare visionary and a gifted surgeon who understands how to deliver care around the whole patient,” said Dr. Joseph V. Lombardi, chief physician executive at AtlantiCare.
“Her appointment as chief of women’s oncology represents a turning point in how cancer care for women will be delivered across South Jersey. Under her leadership, the Women’s Oncology Program will unite world-class surgical expertise with the compassion, access, and innovation women and families in our community deserve.”
In this new role, Dr. Yoon-Flannery will guide program growth while continuing her surgical practice. This dual role reflects her deep commitment to staying closely connected to patients, even as she leads broader efforts to improve coordination across specialties, strengthen team alignment and expand access to care for women across South Jersey.
Yoon-Flannery has been at the forefront of advancing drain-free breast surgery and is recognized nationally for her expertise in advanced approaches, including nipple-sparing mastectomy, hidden-scar techniques, wireless localization, and oncoplastic surgery.
Through its affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute, the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute offers patients access to leading research, clinical trials, multidisciplinary tumor boards and second opinions from internationally recognized cancer experts.
AtlantiCare is a health-care system based in Egg Harbor Township serving more than 110 locations in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, and Ocean counties of southern New Jersey.
